Join Music Director Sid and Milwaukee Record Matt Wild for another Local/Live with MAIIIIAM.
MAllllAM (pronounced “MALL-um”) is a collaborative project between Milwaukee-based musicians mestozi, a rapper and guitarist, and dgelting (pronounced “dee-GELL-ting”), an upright bassist and producer. “Administrator”, their self-released album, is a heavy, jazz-informed collaboration driven by commanding live basslines, layered with sampled drums, field recordings, and textured reverb. dgelting performs much of the instrumentation live, grounding the album physically and reworking a classic jazz motif within something intentional and contemporary.
Lyrically, mestozi moves through themes of guilt, testimony, survival, and attempted atonement, using surreal and unsettling imagery to examine modern dislocation, inherited violence, and the struggle for agency. Lines referencing labor, consumption, state power, and self-expression unfold like fragments of witness rather than linear narrative, inviting listeners to sit with discomfort rather than resolve it.
There’s a sense of spiritual searching beneath the tension. A grappling with responsibility, identity, and what it means to move through systems that extract, surveil, and erase. Administrator leans into weight and momentum, where old-school jazz phrasing meets modern consciousness. Thoughtful and immersive, it holds space for reflection while maintaining a steady drive. It’s a Milwaukee collaboration that blends live musicianship with conscious lyricism, bridging generations through sound.
