WMSE WELCOMES: Saintseneca w/ Blessed Feathers @ Shank Hall
Jun 13 @ 8:00 pm

saintsenecaSaintseneca is a young band from Columbus Ohio led by singer-songwriter and multi instrumentalist Zac Little. Following in the footsteps of heartland bands who have sought to twist the music of the old weird America into new shapes Saintseneca perform songs that sound familiar and uniquely original, all at once.

While the group formed in Columbus Ohio, Little hails from the rural hills of Appalachia. It is a solitary and dramatic landscape that has infused the band’s songs with a sense of introspection and striking narratives. “I was raised on farms in Appalachia,” Little explains, “And I think that my perspective on music was shaped by where I grew up. It was twenty minutes to see the nearest person. Being so isolated forced me to be introspective and resourceful. As a kid I would explore these abandoned houses and barns and wonder what had happened in those places.”

With a diverse assemblage of influences, the band’s poetic lyricism and folk instrumentation is consistently enhanced by elements of pop, post-punk and psychedelia. It is a sound that evolved from playing alongside an array of electrified bands at DIY house shows. “The scene in Columbus is really vibrant and diverse,” Little explains. “The connecting thread has less to do with musical style than a shared ethos. We were this quiet folk band playing with punk and hardcore bands so we would try to channel as much volume and power from those instruments.”

Saintseneca’s upcoming second album Dark Arc is informed by change. While previous records documented the band’s celebrated live show, the new record is the result of both a revamped lineup and a dramatically expanded recording process. Dark Arc conveys an exhilarating mix of darkness and light. Lyrics of disintegration play out against arrangements brimming with buoyant folk, post punk and pop. It’s a powerful combination and highlights a great sense of joy amidst all the doom.

GENRE: PUNK

RIYL: Skating Polly, Slothrust, Dilly Dally, Screaming Females, The Taxpayers, My Chemical Romance

RAT BATH is a band of all trans-gender individuals that reclaim queer-coded villains from their childhood as heros in their storytelling and strive for visibility in the music industry. They describe their sound as “Y’allternative” but have also been called Cow Punk, Alternative Emo, Dirt Americana and Murder Country. Which ever way you slice it; they are fast, loud, and have a unique backwoods edge.

PESCATARIAN AT BEST

GENRE: INDIE ROCK

Pescatarian at Best is a group of five friends making tunes for the fun of it. Their sound is in the realm of indie rock/post-punk, with lyrics ranging anywhere from talking about putting your dad in the “bad” home to escaping a cult. They eat fish sometimes, and are ethically malicious.

WMSE Presents Front Bottoms – You Are Who You Hang Out With Tour @ Rave
Sep 20 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm

New Jersey indie rock duo the Front Bottoms emerged in the late 2000s with a wildly eclectic blend of pop, rock, and punk influences accompanied by witty lyrics that offer a rapid-fire, slightly surreal perspective on the world around them. Early releases like 2011’s The Front Bottoms and 2013’s Talon of the Hawk relied on lean, angular melodies, wiry guitar work, and propulsive drumming. After signing with Fueled By Ramen, the duo’s production aesthetic developed a more full-bodied sound though their thematic quirks were essentially unchanged. They enjoyed greater commercial success on albums like 2017’s Going Grey and 2020’s In Sickness & In Flames which allowed them to continue making smaller fan-favorite releases like 2022’s Theresa EP.
