interview: They Might Be Giants
Mar 15 @ 6:30 pm – 7:00 pm

WMSE catches up with the notorious TMBG before their show in Milwaukee at the Pabst Theater on Friday, March 16th. Tune in for the lowdown!

Why is the world in love again? They Might Be Giants have released I Like Fun, a remarkable 15-track album.

I Like Fun jumps with surprises, vitality, and the startling point of view of these Brooklyn originals. Over a year in the making, songwriters and band founders John Linnell and John Flansburgh draw on themes of dread, death, and disappointment and set them to their driving, hyper-melodic music. The results will leave even the most heavy-hearted among us with a renewed sense of wonder. Fresh and sonically adventurous, the band’s command of the studio and the song is in rare form from beginning to end.

On I Like Fun, the spotlight is also on the band’s formidable long-standing live lineup; drummer Marty Beller, bassist Danny Weinkauf and lead guitarist Dan Miller. While the group enjoys a reputation for delivering one of the liveliest shows around, the album accomplishes the rare feat of capturing that ecstatic intensity on disc. Co-produced with and mixed by Patrick Dillett (St. Vincent, Donald Fagen, The National, Mary J. Blige), the album was tracked and mixed at the brand-new Reservoir Studios—site of the legendary Skyline Studios where TMBG recorded their platinum-selling album Flood.

interview: Chris Vos of The Record Company
Aug 31 @ 4:30 pm – 5:00 pm

Tune into WMSE as Sonia talks to Chris Vos of the Record Company, who are in town for a gig as party of Harley-Davidson’s 115th anniversary weekend celebrations. Before the Record Company, Vos was a mainstay in the Milwaukee Scene in such bands as Freshwater Collins, Invade Rome and Juniper Tar.

From NPR:

It’s been two years since the trio — Chris Vos (lead vocals, guitars), Alex Stiff (bass) and drummer Mark Cazorla — released its Grammy-nominated debut album, Give It Back To You. But the Record Company’s been around much longer, having sent WXPN a demo of “Don’t Let Me Get Lonely” in 2011. After some airplay, listeners immediately responded with choruses of “What’s the song?” and “Who’s that band?” Within the song’s bad-ass boogie, the band conjured the spirits of John Lee Hooker and the Boston blues-rock band Morphine, yet The Record Company’s lead singer Chris Vos brought a fresh, optimistic take on the sound.

With “Life To Fix,” The Record Company is poised to keep their established fan base more than happy, and to win even more new fans. It’s got seventh-inning stretch stadium rock anthem written all over it.

interview: They Might Be Giants
Mar 5 @ 4:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Tune into The Tom Wanderer Radio Experience as we welcome John Flansburgh and John Linnell of They Might Be Giants to the WMSE studios to talk to DJ Tom before their sold-out Milwaukee show at the Pabst Theater.

In honor of the album that made them an international act, They Might Be Giants is celebrating Flood‘s 30th anniversary in 2020 by performing the album, in its entirety, on stages in select cities across the US. The show is “an evening with” and TMBG will play two full sets with their barnstorming live band featuring the show-stopping Curt Ramm on trumpet. How will it be presented? In sequence, in reverse sequence, alphabetical, or mixed into additional repertoire? It could be different on any given night. But, in addition to Flood, the song selection in the “evening with” show will span the band’s entire career from early favorites to brand new tracks, as well as the live improvisations that have become a highlight of TMBG shows.

Before Alternative Rock, when rock dinosaurs still roamed the earth, They Might Be Giants crawled out of the primordial performance art scene of the Lower East Side and on to the college rock scene with a series of breakthrough songs and best-selling albums. Vaulted into the national scene by a series of highly creative videos, the band ultimately garnered the attention of the powerhouse major label Elektra Entertainment. Collaborating with British hit-makers Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, as well as emerging indie engineers Roger Moutenot and Patrick Dillett, the band embarked on an album that would leave their lo-fi roots behind in exchange for a sonic adventure to be called Flood. Embraced by critics and audiences alike, the 19-song album would go on to go platinum and garner a clutch of timeless favorites for the band including “Birdhouse in Your Soul,” “Your Racist Friend,” “Istanbul (Not Constantinople),” “Particle Man,” “Dead,” and many others.
