Rhye w/ Special Guest Lo-Fang @ Pabst Theater
Oct 24 @ 8:00 pm – 11:45 pm

rhyeRhye is the product of two synced paths crossing at the right time and place. The two artists who comprise Rhye had been fond of each other’s work for some time, and it was when one member was working on a remix for the other that they started to collaborate. They had begun talking about the remix at hand, which led them to the conclusion that maybe they should adapt that remix into a whole new song that could be done together.

They had never met in person, so one told the other to meet at a train station in Norreport, Copenhagen. Upon arrival, they immediately started working on the song together. They ended up with three songs they were proud of, which would ultimately end up on their full-length. It all just clicked. Both of their styles of making music completely complimented each other and working together flowed effortlessly.

Eventually, one of them moved to L.A. and the other happened to be coming out to shoot a music video. They met up with two friends from a record label and played them the songs they had made. From that point, the project took off growing into a full length album.

Friday Night Freak Show – Sid & Nancy @ Times Cinema
Feb 8 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

WMSE 91.7FM and The Times Cinema are teaming up to bring you the 1986 punk biopic SID AND NANCY. All tickets are $5. Doors and DJs Von Munz & Squid spin at 8PM. Film at 9PM.

TICKETS: http://bit.ly/2CrwXP3

With the lacerating love story Sid & Nancy, Alex Cox reimagines the crash-and-burn affair between punk’s most notorious self-destructive poster children: Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen—brought to visceral life by brilliant performances from Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb. Cox turns his anarchic filmmaking style on the explosive energy of the London punk scene and the degenerate streets of seventies New York, making for an eviscerating depiction of excess and addiction. Through the lens of cinematographer Roger Deakins, the imagery goes from swooning to grimy, and the film’s bleakness is balanced with surreal humor and genuine tenderness, making for an affecting, music-fueled vision of doomed love.

DEC. 8 – LOCAL/LIVE INTERVIEWS EPISODE 4: JOHANNA ROSE
Dec 8 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

During these strange times, WMSE aims to keep you connected to your local music community by getting up close and personal in conversation while taking a listen to new local projects, albums and songs.

Johanna Rose is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and activist from Milwaukee. They played upright bass, sang and were a pivotal force in such notable groups as Calamity Janes and the Fratney Street Band, RuthB8r Ginsberg, New Boyz Club, and the internationally-renowned duo, Nickel&Rose. They were an organizer of Arte Para Todos and Riverwest FemFest and the curator of Guthrie Uncovered at Turner Hall.

Johanna continues to live part of the year in Milwaukee’s Bronzeville neighborhood and the rest of the year in Glover, Vermont in a treehouse of their own design and construction. 2020 saw them debuting new, solo material for the first time; we will be catching up with Johanna about those releases, that treehouse and their storied musical history in Milwaukee, so far.
