interview: Hot Snakes
Mar 7 @ 1:30 pm – 2:00 pm

Tune into WMSE as we chat with Hot Snakes’ Rick Froberg in advance of the band’s newest record release and show in Milwaukee on Thursday, March 15th.

Swami John Reis and Rick Froberg have been making noises together since high school. In 1986 it was the post-hardcore chime of Pitchfork. In 1991 it was the sprawling, multi-faceted arrangements of Drive Like Jehu. In 1999 it was the lean, mean swagger of Hot Snakes. Reis and Froberg are responsible for some of the most turbulent rock and roll of their, or any, generation.

Hot Snakes streamlined Jehu’s complex compositions and emerged as bona fide downstroke warlords. They made 3 studio albums of high-velocity, slash-your-face, piss-punk: 2000’s Automatic Midnight, 2002’s Suicide Invoice and 2004’s Audit in Progress. The band ceased activity in 2005 but reunited for a triumphant world tour in 2011, planting the seeds for what has cum.

Now, after a 14-year hiatus from the studio, Hot Snakes have kicked down the door back into our lives with their new album, Jericho Sirens, due out March 16 from Sub Pop.

Friday – The Grovelers & The Mighty Deerlick

The Grovelers are a four piece band based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They deliver high energy original rock & roll with influences stemming from late 50’s rockabilly, early 60’s garage rock and early 80’s punk rock.

The Mighty Deerlick has been rocking the people since its formation in La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1985, having outlived thousands of other bands, primarily due to not being organized enough to actually break up. Originally called The Slow Pedestrians, the band took on its current moniker upon moving to Milwaukee in 1988. Ever prolific, the band’s prodigious output includes the full-length cassette “Beneath You” (1989), the four-song 7-inch single “Stag Nation” (1990), and the legendary holiday tour-de-force cassette “Bells to the Wall” (1991). Since 1991, they have written several additional songs. The Deerlick has shared the stage with Soul Asylum, the Replacements, the Violent Femmes, Alejandro Escovedo,

MKE Boat Line Concert Cruise – Steez @ Milwaukee Boat Line
Jul 9 @ 9:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Categorization be damned, steez is — in the simplest terms and most convenient definitions — a funk band, a fusion band, a jamband, a disco-fanged multi-beast, and a basket case.

Churning out their self-described creepfunk, a high energy, danceable variety of funk — one uniquely laced with electronic and improvisational sensibilities — steez has garnered a loyal following throughout the midwest performing at music festivals and to capacity crowds at rapidly growing venues.  steez repeatedly receives acclaim for their live performances, which typically include a seamless weaving of thoughtfully composed originals and crowd pleasing covers spanning from Madonna to clever obscurities like Justice, Ratatat and Bob James (to name a a few).
