WMSE Presents Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues w/ Sam Lay @ The Back Room at Colectivo on Prospect
May 13 @ 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm

corkybluesWMSE presents Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues with Sam Lay.

“Muddy Waters Meets Mozart” with Blues Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Legend Sam Lay and Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues. Original iconic drummer for Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, and Willie Dixon joins Blues harmonica ace Corky Siegel with Chamber Blues in the intiamte Back Room of Collectivo. Few can claim to have forged an entirely original genre of music, but in 1966, Corky Siegel did just that. Guiding the blues of Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters out of the smoky cavern of Big John’s and onto the stages of the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic and beyond, the harmonica-playing mad scientist had the tuxedo-and-gown crowd on its feet, clamoring for more of this blues-classical alchemy. These days, the harmonica virtuoso and composer is continent-hopping with Indian percussion and string quartet in Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues, continuing to bring classical and blues fans shoulder-to-shoulder…and obliterating musical categorization in the process

Robyn Hitchcock @ The Back Room at Colectivo
Apr 5 @ 8:00 pm – 11:30 pm
Robyn Hitchcock is one of England’s most enduring contemporary singer-songwriters and live performers. A surrealist poet, talented guitarist, cult artist and musician’s musician, Hitchcock is among alternative rocks’ father figures and the closest thing the genre has to a Bob Dylan (not coincidentally his biggest musical inspiration). Blending folk and psychedelia with a wry British nihilism, Robyn describes his songs as “paintings you can listen to”.

Friday – The Grovelers & The Mighty Deerlick

The Grovelers are a four piece band based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They deliver high energy original rock & roll with influences stemming from late 50’s rockabilly, early 60’s garage rock and early 80’s punk rock.

The Mighty Deerlick has been rocking the people since its formation in La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1985, having outlived thousands of other bands, primarily due to not being organized enough to actually break up. Originally called The Slow Pedestrians, the band took on its current moniker upon moving to Milwaukee in 1988. Ever prolific, the band’s prodigious output includes the full-length cassette “Beneath You” (1989), the four-song 7-inch single “Stag Nation” (1990), and the legendary holiday tour-de-force cassette “Bells to the Wall” (1991). Since 1991, they have written several additional songs. The Deerlick has shared the stage with Soul Asylum, the Replacements, the Violent Femmes, Alejandro Escovedo,

Rose of The West @ The Back Room at Colectivo
Nov 2 @ 8:00 pm – 11:30 pm

Sequestered in the desert of Western Australia, the vibrant, red flowers of Eucalyptus macrocarpa stand out against the harsh landscape. The rare tree, nicknamed “rose of the west,” manages to prevail over the severe climate, opening its beauty to those who seek it. It’s with this image that Gina Barrington (vocals, guitar) found solace and inspiration for her project Rose of the West.

After a six-year stint in Los Angeles, Barrington felt Milwaukee calling her home, and her writing began to truly take hold. From the ashes of her initial group, Nightgown, came Rose of the West, a dark, dream-pop five-piece. Barrington’s lush sound is bolstered by the musical backgrounds her band members have brought to Rose of the West: Cedric LeMoyne (Remy Zero, Alanis Morissette), Thomas Gilbert (GGOOLLDD), Erin Wolf (Hello Death) and Dave Power (The Staves).

The lead up to Rose of the West has been lengthy and turbulent, but the band is more than ready to share its sprawling debut. Despite the harsh conditions presented to Barrington, she pressed on and has found her voice with Rose of the West, crafting emotive indie-pop.

MKE Boat Line Concert Cruise – Steez @ Milwaukee Boat Line
Jul 9 @ 9:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Categorization be damned, steez is — in the simplest terms and most convenient definitions — a funk band, a fusion band, a jamband, a disco-fanged multi-beast, and a basket case.

Churning out their self-described creepfunk, a high energy, danceable variety of funk — one uniquely laced with electronic and improvisational sensibilities — steez has garnered a loyal following throughout the midwest performing at music festivals and to capacity crowds at rapidly growing venues.  steez repeatedly receives acclaim for their live performances, which typically include a seamless weaving of thoughtfully composed originals and crowd pleasing covers spanning from Madonna to clever obscurities like Justice, Ratatat and Bob James (to name a a few).
