Friday – The Grovelers & The Mighty Deerlick

The Grovelers are a four piece band based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They deliver high energy original rock & roll with influences stemming from late 50’s rockabilly, early 60’s garage rock and early 80’s punk rock.

The Mighty Deerlick has been rocking the people since its formation in La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1985, having outlived thousands of other bands, primarily due to not being organized enough to actually break up. Originally called The Slow Pedestrians, the band took on its current moniker upon moving to Milwaukee in 1988. Ever prolific, the band’s prodigious output includes the full-length cassette “Beneath You” (1989), the four-song 7-inch single “Stag Nation” (1990), and the legendary holiday tour-de-force cassette “Bells to the Wall” (1991). Since 1991, they have written several additional songs. The Deerlick has shared the stage with Soul Asylum, the Replacements, the Violent Femmes, Alejandro Escovedo,

MKE Boat Line Concert Cruise – Steez @ Milwaukee Boat Line
Jul 9 @ 9:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Categorization be damned, steez is — in the simplest terms and most convenient definitions — a funk band, a fusion band, a jamband, a disco-fanged multi-beast, and a basket case.

Churning out their self-described creepfunk, a high energy, danceable variety of funk — one uniquely laced with electronic and improvisational sensibilities — steez has garnered a loyal following throughout the midwest performing at music festivals and to capacity crowds at rapidly growing venues.  steez repeatedly receives acclaim for their live performances, which typically include a seamless weaving of thoughtfully composed originals and crowd pleasing covers spanning from Madonna to clever obscurities like Justice, Ratatat and Bob James (to name a a few).

interview: Mary Lattimore
Dec 7 @ 1:00 pm – 1:30 pm

Tune into WMSE’s Rockleidoscope Show as Erin talks with indie harpist, Mary Lattimore in advance of her show with Ana Roxanne at Bay View’s ACME Records this Wednesday, December 8th.  Lattimore has studied the harp since grade school days living in North Carolina and she’s both played music and worked in college radio over the years, rounding out her musical experiences and inspirations, sealing her signature sounds. She’s played with everyone from Thurston Moore to Kurt Vile, Meg Baird, Mac McCaughan and Steve Gunn and has released solo albums on Thrill Jockey Records, Three Lobed and Ghostly International. Her most recent release – Mary Lattimore: Collected Pieces II – explores her recent archives.

“During the last decade, Lattimore has been at the fore of a surprising but steady harp uprising, with upstarts like Brandee Younger re-energizing it in jazz and Sissi Rada slipping it inside techno. She delights in unfamiliar audiences who first see her instrument as a novelty. But Lattimore handles her harp like a solo guitarist, improvising around contemplative melodies with the help of pedals that warp her crystalline tone and seem to bend time.”
