Hibou @ Club Garibaldi’s @ Club Garibaldi
Nov 23 @ 8:00 pm – 11:45 pm

hibouHibou is the Seattle-based solo project of 21-year-old Peter Michel, former drummer for Craft Spells. Not straying far from the wondrous dream pop of his previous gig, his debut album, described as a “lush” record “fueled by twisting reverbed-out guitar melodies” and “elegant arrangements.” Like a nod to its title, Michel’s faded vocals and tingling guitars are cloaked in a smoky haze, seemingly just seconds away from completely ceasing to be.

in-studio performance: Far Corner
Aug 18 @ 9:00 pm – 9:30 pm

Tune into WMSE’s Planet Prog to catch a performance from Milwaukee’s Far Corner, live at 9pm! WMSE.org to listen live in the archives or 91.7 FM on your radio dial…

Far Corner is a classical chamber rock quartet from Milwaukee Wisconsin. Keys, cello, bass, and percussion combine to perform improvised works, composed works, and everything in between, playing adventurous progressive rock.

“This is not only a very accomplished recording — it’s a very entertaining one.” – All Music Guide

“Far Corner is more than just a band of highly skilled performers of detailed composition.  What separates Far Corner from its progenitors is its apparent lack of ego.  Far Corner seems more about dedication to the writing, and to creating a vibe that says more by implication than by overt display. – All About Jazz

“Keyboards, cello, bass and drums cooperate for instrumental “chamber rock”, a synthesis of a heavier progressive style with acoustic elements like cello…. with the cello often following a perfectly-intoned tenth above, resulting in a slithery, silky undertow for the band….Mind-blowing…. fun to listen to…” – Keyboard

“‘Chamber rock’ may not be the most commercial of genres, but it’s the basis for one of the most exciting new groups in instrumental progressive music.  The Milwaukee quartet Far Corner, comprised of musicians with years of experience playing jazz and rock…make provocative and moody soundscapes that are oddly familiar yet uncomfortably distant.  …Even listeners who aren’t typically drawn to instrumental albums may be enlightened by this one.” – Goldmine

in-studio performance: Common Holly (Barsuk Records)
Dec 12 @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Tune into WMSE’s Tom Wanderer Radio Experience at 5pm as Montreal band, Common Holly [Barsuk Records] drop by the studios to play a set before their show at Cactus Club with OQ and Haunter that night!

“Holding fast to the emotional honesty of Playing House (2017), Brigitte Naggar’s sophomore record as Common Holly, When I say to you Black Lightning, is a look outward; an exploration of the ways in which we all experience pain, fear and self-delusion, and how we can learn to confront those feelings with boldness. When I say to you Black Lightning feels like Naggar’s conversation with herself, meticulously penned to work through challenges as they unfold. It’s cool, and more than that, it feels important. It’s about finding the seeds of strength to navigate adult life, and about the ways in which we all find ourselves in that place of struggle when life starts to show you its cards and you begin to understand, in the artist’s words, “just how real s*** can get.””
