The-Staves-Tongue-Behind-My-Teeth-500x281

Tune into WMSE as Jason of The Modern Chamber welcomes Emily, Jessica and Camilla Stavely-Taylor – or “The Staves” as they’re known — for a chat in advance of their show at Club Garbaldi on Sunday evening with Trevor Sensor. The sisters hail from Watford, Hertfordshire, England and have come to acclaim for their beautiful vocal harmonies and built notoriety from their work with Tom Jones and Bon Iver and while touring with Nathaniel Rateliff, The Civil Wars, Bon Iver and Florence and the Machine.

“2015 was a stellar year for the three Watford sisters, and arguably the best is still to come. Following the widespread global acclaim for the Justin Vernon produced ‘If I Was’, The Staves enjoyed a fantastic summer of festivals, with a standout performance on The Park Stage at Glastonbury. They were announced as the special guests on Florence and the Machine’s sold-out arena tour of the UK, where they wowed Florence’s broad audiences. The Staves finished the year with their own UK tour, including their largest headline show to date at Londons Roundhouse. 2016 will see the band taking ‘If I Was’ on the road again on a headline tour of North America, in addition to a string of festival dates on both sides of the Atlantic.”

Gurf Morlix at Anodyne Coffee Roasters @ Anodyne Roasting Company
Nov 4 @ 7:00 pm – 11:30 pm

gurf (2)Gurf moved to Los Angeles, worked for more than a decade as Lucinda Williams’ guitarist, band-leader and backing vocalist, produced Lucinda’s acclaimed Sweet Old World and eponymous albums, famously left Lucinda, toured with Warren Zevon, moved back to Austin, produced a number of classic Americana albums you likely own if you are any kind of Americana music fan, played on many more albums you probably own if you fall into that category, got inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame, received the Americana Music Association’s Instrumentalist of the Year award, went on to make seven critically acclaimed albums of his own, and then toured the world supporting them. He now continues to play live, produce albums for the artists that move him, and make his own albums. He even goes fishing ever once in a while.

That’s the resume, but it’s Gurf’s integrity, combined his near innate sense of music and how to make it sound not just good, but great, that have attracted so many well-respected artists to work with him over the years folks like Ian McLagan, Patty Griffin, Robert Earl Keen, Buddy Miller, Mary Gauthier, Tom Russell, Butch Hancock, Slaid Cleaves and Ray Wylie Hubbard, just to name a few. And, oh yeah, he can make nearly any instrument with strings either sing or growl, depending on the needs of the song, like no other musician out there.

The Chicken Shack Presents “Marty Stuart & The Fabulous Superlatives” @ The Rave
Apr 7 @ 8:00 pm – 11:45 pm

martystuartWMSE’s The Chicken Shack presents Five-time GRAMMY-winner MARTY STUART making his debut at The Rave/Eagles Club on April 7th. He just released the video for his new single “Way Out West,” which is also the title track of his 18th studio album which will be released March 10th. Stuart has spent over four decades celebrating American roots music. His teenage years on tour with bluegrass legend Lester Flatt in the ’70s were followed by six years in Johnny Cash’s band in the ’80s, and a chart-topping tenure as a solo artist in the ’90s. Expect a night of classic Country and roots music, in the vein of Johnny Cash. “Lester Flatt saw something in me and gave me his wisdom, wit and music. Johnny Cash was my best friend. But all of that doesn’t come for free. The job is to pass it along,” says Stuart, stretching out his arms. “That’s the way it’s supposed to be in country music.”

WMSE SMASH ALE 18 Presents The Waco Brothers / The Tritonics to open @ Anodyne on Bruce
Aug 24 @ 7:00 pm – 11:45 pm

Join Chicken Shack Host Johnny Z at Anodyne for the Waco Brothers and The Tritonics.

The Wacos race towards the crossroads of punk and country, heedless of speed limits and stop signs. The collisions spectacular, loud, energizing and sometimes messy. We’ve seen them a two hundred and forty six times, and the Waco Brothers never fail to entertain. Subtlety is for the weak, so they’ve chosen the path of optimum mayhem and tomfoolery. In their rollicking career, they have been called everything from the flagship act of the alternative country “movement” to pure butchery. Both are likely to be correct, even within one evening.

Local faves – The Tritonics open the night.

Chicken Shack Straight Rye Release & Bluegrass Bonanza ft. Horseshoes & Hand Grenades @ Great Lakes Distillery
Jun 10 @ 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm

On Saturday, June 10th, in conjunction with WMSE’s Chicken Shack Radio Show, Great Lakes Distillery will be releasing Chicken Shack Straight Rye Whiskey for the second year in a row. Chicken Shack Rye is a single barrel straight rye whiskey, bottled at 91.7 proof, giving a polite nod to WMSE’s frequency that shares the same numbers. To celebrate, Great Lakes Distillery is offering its first outdoor ticketed show with Horseshoes & Hand Grenades and opening act Chicken Wire Empire. To round things off, the folks from Central Waters Brewing Co. will be bringing out a bunch of tasty beers, including HHG Pale Ale, inspired by the music of Horseshoes & Hand Grenades. Several local food trucks will be on-hand during the show to keep everyone fed.

Tickets for the event are $25 each and the first 500 tickets sold will include a Plucker’s Punch featuring rye whiskey. Great Lakes Distillery offers ample parking, however we advocate for a planned safe ride home and will have designated areas for Uber/Lyft pick-up and drop-off.

The idea of Great Lakes Distillery launching a product with WMSE starts right from the distillery floor. “We don’t have many hard and fast rituals around here, but tuning into the Chicken Shack with Jonny Z Friday mornings is definitely one of them,” says Head Distiller Nate Newbrough.

In 2022, 215 bottles of Chicken Shack Straight Rye Whiskey were released mid-May and sold out in under a week. “Milwaukee is a city where partnerships don’t have to be forced. When good people work with good people, good results generally follow,” says Tasting Room Manager, Brendan Cleary.

On Saturday, June 10th, the show will be held in the back parking lot of Great Lakes Distillery, in the shadows of the 6th St. viaduct and around the roundabout from The Iron Horse Hotel. “Since we moved to this location, we have always wanted to utilize this backspace behind our building. The 6th St. viaducts are such an underrated Milwaukee landmark, and this show will be a great way to enjoy them,” says Great Lakes Distillery Founder, Guy Rehorst.

Horseshoes & Hand Grenades is a high energy bluegrass quintet act out of Stevens Point, Wisconsin. After 10 years of touring from the west to the east coasts, they offer one of the tightest Americana acts in the country. Supporting them will be Milwaukee’s own Chicken Wire Empire, a bluegrass quintet from right in our own backyard. Chicken Wire Empire played the first Chicken Shack Straight Rye Release Block Party in 2022, and are jumping right back into action in 2023. “This is such a great bill for the city, especially as it will be one of the first outdoor shows of the season,” says Chicken Wire Empire Bassist, Jordan Kroeger.

Join us on Saturday, June 10th, at 616 W. Virginia St., to enjoy Bluegrass music, craft cocktails, craft beer, and local food. Gates open at 6:00 pm, and the show starts at 7:00pm. Purchase tickets online at GreatLakesDistillery.com. This show is rain or shine! *We will reschedule and refund any tickets necessary in the event of an extreme weather event.
