4th Annual Art & Music – VIRTUAL EVENT @ WMSE.ORG
Jul 31 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Live art and live music to share the spotlight at WMSE’s 4th annual Art & Music event

This VIRTUAL  event centers around an auction featuring more than 150 album-sized 12″ x 12″ boards (provided by Bliffert Lumber) and 36 x 36 pieces will be revealed throughout the evening – created by locally and nationally famous artists. The Erotic Adventures of the Static Chicken will perform and exceptional music from the Brown Deer Conservatory. All of the proceeds of the evening will support WMSE and help the station continue the work it does to support the local arts community.

Local artist Brendan Murphy is the featured artist for this year’s Art & Music promotional materials. Murphy was last year’s live painter at the event.  “This piece is meant to be a celebration of art and music, of WMSE, and of the unique event that supports all three,” said Murphy. “I used a flower pattern inspired by Alphonse Mucha, surrounding a space scene encapsulated within the shape of a 45 record with an adapter in the middle. The piece was originally going to contain a portrait with a circle behind it in a warped art-nouveau style, but the circle was reminiscent of a record and this seemed more appropriate. From a conversation with my mother about the aesthetic appeal of a 45 adapter, it seemed a fitting focal point to merge art and music and make a more solid reference to a record.”

WMSE’s Art & Music is supported by The Pritzlaff as well as Bliffert’s Lumber and Hardware, Enlightened Brewing Company, Great Lakes Distillery, and Ticket King. A very special thanks to Cori Coffman and Brett Waterhouse for helping to make this event possible.

interview: Josh Okeefe
Mar 11 @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Tune into WMSE as Sonia speaks with English x US folk artist, Josh Okeefe before he heads to Milwaukee’s Irish Cultural & Heritage Center for a show on April 9th. Only on WMSE!

Born in Derby, England, the relatively new artist delivers potent lyrics with the gravitas of a seasoned veteran. After dropping out of school at age 16, Okeefe led a nomadic life in music that spans generations and encompasses myriad genres, traditions and disciplines. He often slept on the floors of recording studios and coffee houses before traveling to the United States in search of the places his music idols Hank Williams and Johnny Cash once roamed. After settling in Nashville, he began writing songs at an astonishing pace and selling out shows from New York to California.

Okeefe has performed at major music events on both sides of the Atlantic including the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival, where he sang “This Land is Your Land” with Woody’s son Arlo. He was also invited by English singer-songwriter and activist Billy Bragg to play at the prestigious Glastonbury Festival in 2019. Okeefe has also shared the stage with Alison Krauss, Rufus Wainwright and Ramblin’ Jack Elliot among others and performed for a crowd of 10,000 for Kris Kristofferson’s birthday.
