acoustic in-studio: Chris Porterfield (of Field Report)
Oct 21 @ 1:00 pm – 1:30 pm

chrisporterfield“In the hands of Field Report’s Chris Porterfield, the word “home” starts shaping itself into something that signifies far more than just a dwelling or a town.

Field Report’s second album, Marigolden, finds Porterfield writing about home with such yearning and fiery certainty that the word seems much bigger, weighted with nuances and multi-layered significance. In the context of the 10 emotionally vulnerable songs that make up the record, home stands in for everything that is right—or should be right—in the world.”

Alverno Presents – Chris Porterfield: How To Write A Popular Song
Jan 30 @ 8:00 pm – 11:45 pm

PorterfieldsongWMSE supports Alverno Presents- Chris Porterfield: How To Write A Popular Song. In 1893, Charles K. Harris changed the American Popular Song
when “After the Ball”, became the first multi-million seller. Declared the “king of the tear jerkers”, Harris believed songs should tell a story. In 1906, he told the world how to do this in his book, How to Write a Popular Song: A Practical Tutorial on Song Writing — with Music & Lyric Samples showing “good” from “bad”. That he did all of this in Milwaukee at the close of the 19th Century makes his story all the more intriguing to 21st Century singer-songwriter Christopher Porterfield. For Christopher Porterfield: How to Write a Popular Song, Chris assembles a stellar consort of singer- songwriter friends to (1) re-interpret the songs from the extensive Charles K. Harris catalogue, and (2) follow the instructions from Charles K. Harris’ book to write their own, brand-new “popular songs”.

LOCAL/LIVE: JANUARY 12– CHRIS PORTERFIELD @ THE RING
Jan 12 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

On Tuesday, January 12th, WMSE will again bring its listeners live music over the airwaves with Local/Live at The Ring via Kneeverland Productions. Our guest for this round is world-renowned folk musician, Chris Porterfield of Field Report.

Chris Porterfield is a songwriter, singer and guitarist in his chosen home of Milwaukee. His work showcases his idiosyncratic ideas of confessional folk music filtered through both classic and contemporary lenses.  He is best known for his project Field Report which has released four albums and toured all over the world with artists like Jeff Tweedy, Aimee Mann, Counting Crows and Emmylou Harris.

Although Field Report’s latest release, Brake Light Red Tide, was released in April of 2020, the band is newly issuing forth a limited, vinyl version (pre-order a copy of the LP until January 15th, here). Hear more about that LP and hear solo renditions of the songs, themselves, on the 12th.

Join WMSE with Chris Porterfield on Tuesday, January 12th for Local/Live streaming live from The Ring. Watch at WMSE.org and on WMSE’s YouTube (through Roku), Vimeo and social media accounts or just listen live at 91.7 FM on your radio dial. It all goes down at the 6 o’clock hour.

Local/Live is presented by Third Space Brewing. “You have your home, you have your work, but everyone needs a third space.”
